The event is expected to attract more than 125,000 visitors to a full slate of family-oriented activities, non-stop musical entertainment and international flavors of more than 20 food vendors.

The centerpiece of Main Street Festival is a juried arts and crafts show featuring some 200 vendors with original and hand crafted wares. Oil and watercolor paintings, pottery, jewelry, furniture, woodworking, ornamental iron, stained glass, photography, home and garden accents, birdhouses, leatherwork, and much more will be showcased on Main Street from First to Fifth Avenues.

In addition to a juried arts and crafts show, the festival offers a special area of children’s activities on Third Avenue South between City Hall and the Old Courthouse.

Entertainment

Free entertainment is offered continuously on two stages:  one on the Public Square and another on Fourth Avenue North! The Xfinity Stage on the Public Square will feature local bands playing a variety of genres: Indie, Country, Rock, Bluegrass, Gospel and more. Eric Heatherly and his “Goats of Kudzu” will headline a Saturday night street dance on the Public Square from 8:30 – 10 p.m. The Heritage Stage, located on Fourth Avenue North, will feature a variety of local dance groups, including the Ann Carroll School of Dance, Tommy Jackson’s Rocky Top Revue and the Nashville Ballet.

Returning this year is the very popular carnival component, located this year on Second Ave. N., on the Harpeth Square development site. Carnival activities kick off at 5 p.m. on Thursday.

A beer tent on Fourth Avenue South will feature pub-style entertainment such as karaoke and corn hole. A kids’ zone on Third Avenue South will offer a variety of inflatables, train and pony rides, a petting zoo, bungee jump, and other activities for a small fee.

Food

No street festival is complete without food, and more than 20 food vendors will offer a tasty variety of everything from roasted corn on the cob and stuffed baked potatoes to fish tacos, Greek gyros, and Asian and Mexican cuisines. Don’t forget the Southern fare! Barbecue, burgers and hot dogs, funnel cakes, kettle corn and more will be available.

Green Pixie Baby is once again providing the Diaper Changing and Nursing Station to help young families care for their children in comfort.  We are thrilled to be a part of the Main Street Fest and to show our support and love of our community.  We hope you'll enjoy the festival!

Empowering Fearless Birth Conference March 8th, 2014

ABOUT THE EMPOWERING FEARLESS BIRTH CONFERENCE:

This event is not another debate about midwives versus doctors. It's not a conference with an agenda to encourage a lower C-section rate or tell families they need to birth a specific way. It's not solely for birth professionals in any industry. Though a vast source of education and empowerment for expecting couples, it's not even only for those expecting a baby. The Empowering Fearless Birth is for you, for everyone. It is for anyone who has ever thought of birth with some uncertainty – whether you have yet to experience it or have a line kids following you around wherever you go. It is for women and men, married or single. It is for anyone who thinks about what effects society – because birth truly does. No one said it better than the Farm midwife, Ina May Gaskin, a true pioneer and great influence in the birth community, “Birth matters... it matters because it is the way we all begin our lives outside of our sources, our mother's bodies. It’s the means from which we enter and feel our first impression of the wider world. For each mother, it is an event that shakes and shapes her to her innermost core. Womens' perceptions about their bodies and their babies’ capabilities will be deeply influenced by the care they receive around the time of birth.”



The Empowering Fearless Birth event was motivated from several factors. Tennessee offers amazing birth professionals including the previously quoted Ina May Gaskin – winner of “The Right Livelihood” award, creator of “the Gaskin Maneuver,” 2013 inductee to the National Women's Hall of Fame, and nationally recognized speaker. She and many other skilled midwives including Carol Nelson, who wrote and lobbied for the Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) law in Tennessee, have made history, making advances for birthing mothers not only nationally, but worldwide. These incredible trail blazers live and work right here in Middle Tennessee. Tennessee is home to rich birth-related advances between the Farm Midwives, Vanderbilt hospital, and other groups. Now is the time to reach out to these resources, learn from them, and make the choices so many women don't realize they have.



The conference offers a line-up nationally recognized speakers including Stacie Hunt. Hunt trained with the Farm Midwives and has been a member of the Farm Midwifery crew for more than 15 years. She is passionate about releasing fear during pregnancy and in preparation for birth. Having worked as a nurse in a hospital for many years, and as a midwife outside the hospital, she will be speaking about how choosing your care provider can have an incredible impact on your birth experience. Cristen Pascucci will also be participating in the conference. Up until her son Henry was born in December 2011, Pascucci was busy with a career in politics, media, and public relations. She left that all behind to dive into pregnancy, birth and a baby. She serves as the Vice-President of ImprovingBirth.org and is on the advisory board for Human Rights in Childbirth, and is working to build a national legal network in the US to bring recognition to the human rights of women in pregnancy and birth. At the conference, Cristen hopes to help women understand and take control of what happens at the birth of their child, by empowering them to educate themselves on the options that will be available to them and all that will be presented on the day of delivery. Joe Valley, owner of www.empoweredpapa.com will also be speaking. He is a birth advocate, certified therapist, and is passionate about educating and empowering fathers to discover their preferred role in the birth of their children. He speaks nationally to birth professionals reminding them that fathers are part of the process, and teaching them how to include them. See more about Joe Valley here.



In addition to these key-note speakers, Panel discussions will be lead by local parents with specific birth experience including hospital birth, cesarean section birth, VBAC, home birth and more. We will also hold the amazing "Dad Panel," where several dads who've experienced different types of birth situations will share their perspective in a Q&A panel format. Classes will be taught by nationally recognized speakers as well as local birth professionals. Topics will include choosing your care provider, planning your birth, choosing a childbirth class, bonding with your baby and others. An additional room will be set up for vendors so attendees can meet local business owners and birth professionals to help prepare them for the birth and parenting experience they desire.



Laura Stavoe Harm is quoted, “There is a secret in our culture and it is not that birth is painful, but that women are strong.” Birth isn’t the beginning or the end of the process. Everything begins months before when two people begin discussion the possibility of conceiving a child. As well as it continues through the life of the child and the developing family core. The Great Cloth Diaper Change 2013 in TN

Green Pixie Baby is excited to once again co-host this world wide cloth diaper event.  This year we are partnering with Smile, Mommy Diaper Service! to help spread some cloth diaper love.  We hope you will join us for a cloth diaper swap before the official change time.  The event will be held at the East Nashville Community Center located at 600 Woodland Street  Nashville, TN 37206 from 10:00 am to 11:30 am.

In 2012, 256 locations in 15 countries held SIMULTANEOUS events to break the world record for the most reusable cloth diapers changes simultaneously. That meant that some events (like in Malaysia) happened at 2am!

In 2013, we will be holding a slightly different event. This year, we will be changing the diapers at 11am LOCAL TIME, so the change will roll around the world. In order to make this event a success and increase awareness of reusable cloth diapers, we need your participation!

Country Save Corp. is a Pacific Northwest company founded in 1977 by Elmer Pearson. Elmer was not only a pretty smart guy out of college with a chemistry degree, he was also a very talented baseball player! In the mid 30's he was hired by The Borden Company to be a bench chemist AND the played second base on the Borden Baseball Team that played other company teams throughout the Midwest in those days preceding and during WWII, and after. As a bench chemist it was Elmer's job to invent new products and it wasn't all that long until he created the first version of that wonderful product we all now know as Elmer's Glue™! Baby's Food

When is Baby ready for solids? There are some that say between 4-6 months. I am of the belief that month six is the best time for healthy babies to begin on solids. During the first six months breast milk is best for baby and no additional juices, or foods are needed. The maturity of baby’s digestive system is not something that we can readily observe, research indicates that 6 months appears to be ideal for avoiding the allergies and other health risks of too-early solids. Of course all babies are different so watch for these signs to tell if your baby is ready to begin on solids.

Signs that indicate baby is developmentally ready for solids include:

•Baby can sit up well without support.
•Baby has lost the tongue-thrust reflex and does not automatically push solids out of his mouth with his tongue.
•Baby is ready and willing to chew.
•Baby is developing a “pincer” grasp, where he picks up food or other objects between thumb and forefinger. Using the fingers and scraping the food into the palm of the hand (palmar grasp) does not substitute for pincer grasp development.
•Baby is eager to participate in mealtime and may try to grab food and put it in his mouth.

Once your baby is ready for solids your family will need to decide whether you will purchase baby food from the store, or make your own at home.

If you decide on purchasing commercial baby foods read the labels carefully. Choose foods without added sugars, modified starches, wheat, rice or other flours. Products with single ingredients and water are best, and avoid baby food "desserts". Purchasing commercial baby food can be costly. New parents spend an average of $300 on baby food during their infant's first year of life. Many parents spend much more, while a few never buy prepared baby foods.

You can prepare your own baby food at home. Doing so will save you money, and will give you the comfort of knowing what's in the food, and when it was prepared. There are many gadgets on the market for preparing baby food. While they are all probably wonderful products, you can get by with using a standard food processor, blender, or even a potato masher. It is best to start with single ingredients first to watch for allergies.

Simply boil, bake or steam the food, let cool, then puree it (You may wish to push green beans (or peas) through a sieve or mesh strainer to get rid of any remaining skins).

You can make large batches and freeze in ice cube trays covered with plastic wrap, or glass containers with lids.

Each cube is equal to approximately 1 ounce of food.

Once the cubes of puree have set and are frozen, take the trays out of the freezer and transfer the cubes into freezer bags.

Be sure to label the bag with the date of preparation as well as the type of food. The baby food cubes should be used within a month of freezing.

When it is time to feed baby, simply take out the number of food cubes needed and thaw and then reheat.

Once baby has tried several fruits and veggies experiment with combining ingredients like sweet potatoes and apples or pears and butternut squash. To thin out veggies, and to help baby adapt to the new flavors you can add some breast milk to give baby a familiar and comforting taste.

Smile Mommy! Diaper Service

Smile, Mommy! Diaper Service is owned and operated by wife and husband team Kelly and Aron Bacher. They were first customers of Smile, Mommy!, fell in love with it, and decided to purchase it when it threatened to close. They live in East Nashville with their son, Brey – born 12/5/10 – their elderly Australian Shepherd, Mate, and Aron's cat.

Why We Chose Cloth Diapers

I LOVE cloth diapers and now love to help other families fall in love with them too.

How and why did we land where we are today? I don't even remember what initially made us consider it. We didn't have any friends or family that ever used cloth diapers and they were not as accessible as they are now. In fact I think all of our family thought we were crazy and wouldn't stick with them. We weren't even sure if we could manage it with six other children, and both of us working full time. Yet, we decided to give them a "try". We are a "green" family and it just made sense.

We looked at our options, and also decided that if we were going to use cloth we were going to use American made cloth (I know a completely separate issue). So, we ordered our first round of cloth diapers. OMG!! It was love at first sight. Those soft, colorful, tiny newborn Thirsties diapers were so stinkin adorable!! We removed "try" from our discussion about cloth and changed it to USE. We we're blessed to find a wonderful daycare in Franklin (Creekwood Academy) that happily accepted our cloth diapered baby. I have since visited many day cares in the area and all but one said they would accept cloth diapers. =) So we had our supplies, and our daycare, now onto dealing with the POOP! I was nervous at first (ok, paranoid) that I would not be able to clean off all the poopy and get back those clean fluffy diapers. Thanks to the invention of a diaper sprayer, and soft breast milk poop, my diapers stayed beautiful for two full years. Yes, cloth diapers take a little extra time to launder, and yes occasionally you will have to deal with a bit of stink, but we never once regretted using cloth diapers. We traveled to California and back using only cloth (twice), we worked full time jobs, breast fed, and started a family business selling the cloth that we fell in love with.

There are a million sites with actual facts about why to choose cloth. Financially it makes sense so hubbies read this: the average family saves between $1,500-$2,000 over a two year period by using cloth. Environmentally it makes sense so Earth lovers read this: the standard disposable diaper takes 500 years or more to decompose in a landfill, which means every diaper ever pooped in is out there contaminating our earth right now. Health benefits of cloth are tremendous, so all parents read this: standard disposable diapers contain three chemicals of concern:

1st: Sodium Polyacrylate is often visible as small gel-like crystals on the skin of babies and is thought to be linked to skin irritations and respiratory problems. This chemical was removed from tampons due to toxic shock syndrome concerns. As it has only been used in diapers for the last two decades, there is not yet research on the long-term health effects of sodium polyacrylate on babies.

2nd: Tributyl-tin (TBT). According to the EPA, this toxic pollutant is extremely harmful to aquatic (water) life and causes endocrine (hormonal) disruptions in aquatic organisms. TBT is a polluting chemical that does not degrade but remains in the environment and in our food chain. TBT is also an ingredient used in biocides to kill infecting organisms. Additionally, according to research published by the American Institute of Biological Sciences, tributyl-tin can trigger genes that promote the growth of fat cells, causing obesity in humans.

3rd: Dioxin. Disposable diapers contain traces of Dioxin, an extremely toxic by-product of the paper-bleaching process. It is a carcinogenic chemical, listed by the EPA as the most toxic of all cancer-linked chemicals. It is banned in most countries, but not the U.S.


Why risk the health of your child, or the future of our planet for "convenience"? Besides those disposable diapers are stiff, wouldn't you rather have your baby in a soft fluffy diaper? Plus they look much better in photographs!

Help Put Cloth Diapers in the Record Books
Cloth diapers have come a long way in past 10 years, and it’s time to stand up and be noticed. Celebrate Earth Day, by joining the North American and International cloth diaper communityon April 23rd, 2011 at 9AM PDT (11:00AM TN time)to set the Guinness world record for the most cloth diapers changed simultaneously.

There are many ways to participate so please take a few minutes to explore the site to find a location near you or offer to host a location of your own. The more babies participating the better, so every cloth diapered bum counts. Can’t attend an event near you? Consider getting involved in your local cloth diaper community by learning more about organizations like the RDIA and RDA.

We can’t wait to put cloth diapers into the record books!

Join the many midwives and friends who know the little-known stories about the mothers of American midwifery for a night of honoring and heckling.

This public event will occur during the Midwives Alliance of North America (MANA) annual conference.

A cash bar of midwifery themed cocktails will be available. A Rum Rush, anyone?
Immediately following the roast, stay for a free screening of Guerilla Midwife.
Tickets are $20 on-line until October 12th and $25 at the door.
